Hannaford History

under the name of Hannaford and the names Shop 'n Save and Sun Foods, Hannaford

supermarkets. Currently there are over 27,000 associate employees and the company
has sales in excess of $2.9 billion per year. The competing supermarkets are Stop and Shop* along with Shaws.
Hannaford supermarket began on the waterfront of Portland Maine as a one horse operation
in when 1883 Arthur Hannaford began selling fruits & vegetables from a one-horse
produce cart. The Hannaford brothers were farmers in Cape Elizabeth, Maine and
following Arthur, Howard and Edward began wholesaling their produce in a shop
in Portland. In time the Hannaford Brothers built a major wholesaling business
incorporating the business in 1902. The business continued to grow and Hannaford
Bros. became the leading produce wholesaler in New England. The company began
wholesale grocery sales in 1939 with the purchase of a grocery company and continued
its growth in the wholesale grocery and produce business for the next few decades
until 1944 when the company entered the retail market when the brothers opened
their first supermarket. Growth continued for the company and the management and
operations that were utilized in their success were put to use in other chains purchased
by the company that came under the flag of Hannaford Bros. The Hannaford brothers
were connecting wholesaling with direct sales at their stores and profiting from the
unique business model of linking wholesale distributors with retailers which became
a supermarket industry standard for increased profit margins. This model was used
to further expand the Hannaford stores as the company invested in more supermarket
chains and 2002 changed all stores in New England to the Hannaford flagship name
and continued expansion with the purchase and building of more supermarkets in
Central and Southeastern Massachusetts and Southern New Hampshire.
In 1997 Hannaford Bros. secured a reputation as a leading-edge technology adopter
when the company became the first retailer in the world to implement a store-level wide
area network that connected cash registers with management computer servers. This
technology allowed for faster and accurate transactions, which in turn allowed for theneed for less cash register lanes which in turn allowed for more merchandising space
and more sales.
The introduction of the first storewide nutrition navigation system in the United States
was done by Hannaford. The system uses a shelf-tag rating system that allows
shoppers to identify nutritional foods that they may purchase.
Hannaford Bros. contracted and built the world's first supermarket to meet the highest
standards of the U.S. Green Building Council: Platinum LEED (Leadership in Energy
and Environmental Design). The 49,000-square-foot store, opened in July 2009 in
Augusta, Maine. The store features a state-of-the-art refrigeration system that uses 50
percent less refrigerant gas than a traditional system and an alternative heating and
cooling system powered by ground water from two geothermal wells, located 750 feet
underground.
